Notes:
Spleen, skeletal muscle, lung slide: Congestion: This means the blood vessels are filled and swollen with blood (more than normal). Otherwise, the tissue appears normal. And we have included the slide because it otherwise is a good illustration of normal appearance.

Small intestine; large intestine slide: There are two additional pieces of tissue on this slide. Top left: appendix. You can see the circular muscle. The center is filled with fat and fibrous tissue instead of glands. This is a common and benign change. Otherwise, the appearance is normal. Lower right: Smooth muscle from rectum. (Lower left: colon. Middle: small intestine.)

1-2 Epithelium – squamous

1. Select the “Skin; esophagus, skeletal muscle” slide above.

a. There are three different tissue types on the slide.

2. Low power: Identify the skin.

3. Medium power: Identify the layers of the skin.

4. High power: Identify the epithelium.

i. What features make it squamous epithelium?

ii. Identify the layers of the epithelium.

5. Adnexal structures:

a. Identify a hair follicle.

b. Are there any other adnexal structures (sebaceous glands, sweat glands, etc.)?

i. Identify each.
