Discussion Questions

Scroll down for more questions.

1. Orient the specimen at the start of the video. Is the view anterior or posterior? Identify superior and inferior. What structures can you identify?

2. Orient the lungs at 00:16. Is the view anterior or posterior? Identify superior and inferior. Identify right and left. What structures can you identify?

3. Orient the heart at 00:16. Is the view anterior or posterior? Identify superior and inferior. Identify right and left. What structures can you identify?

5. Orient the heart at 00:21. Is the view anterior or posterior? Identify superior and inferior. Identify right and left. What structures can you identify?

6. Identify each valve. Estimate a measurement (circumference) based on the ruler each image. Are the measurements normal? Does any valve show any pathology? If so, which? What might be its significance?

7. Identify and name the visible cranial sutures at 00:46.

8. What evidence of cranial surgery is there?

9. Review the external views of the brain. Identify the arachnoid mater. Identify where the arachnoid mater is stripped off the brain surface.

10. Orient the brain for each view in the video. Note when the view is superior or inferior; right lateral or left lateral; and identify anterior and posterior each time the view changes.

11. Identify any lobes of the brain in each of the different views in the video.

12. Identify the cerebellum, pons, medulla, and midbrain wherever you can as the views change.

13. Identify any inferior brain structures (named vessels, circle of Willis, cranial nerves, etc.)

14. Tip: At 1:11 the bone is pale right next to the bone saw’s cut edge. Below that there is some brown pigment. It looks like a shadow, but it is not. It is pigment. Is the location of the pigment epidural or subdural? How can you tell?

15. Tip: (Continued) This pigment is called hemosiderin. What is hemosiderin? Why is it there? Correlate the finding with the history. Do you think the hemosiderin is there because of an event before or after the surgery? Or is it related to the surgical procedure itself? Why?
